DEAD STRETCH:
After stretching no recovery or shrinkage back to former length. Important in crepe paper masking tapes.

DEFECT:
Failure to meet design tape requirements.

DELAMINATION:
The tearing or splitting of the back layer within a tape. In laminated tapes the separation of the layers when unwinding, in paper tapes the delamination happens in the paper.

DENSITY:
Material amount in a unit volume.

DICER:
A machine used to cut rubber compounds into size before making them into an adhesive.

DIELECTRIC STRENGTH:
The voltage in volts or in volts per mil that a tape will withstand without breaking down and passing current through it.

DIP IMPREGNATION:
Saturation of a web by putting it in a latex or solution to unify and bond the fibers together.

DIRECT COATING:
Solution applied directly to the web to be coated by the engraved roll of a print roll coating unit.

DISPERSION:
Distribution of particles in a matrix of another substance.

DOCTOR BAR OR BLADE:
A scraper mechanism used to regulate the amount of adhesive that is on the spreader rolls of a coater.

DOCTOR ROLL:
Roller mechanism that regulates the adhesive applied to the spreader roll of a Reverse Roll coater, revolving at a different speed this results in a wiping action.

DOUBLE-FACE TAPE:
An adhesive tape with coatings on both sides of its backing with a release liner interlined.
